Text: Proverbs 18:1-2, 4, 6-8, 13, 17, 19-21
[1] Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment. [2] A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.
[4] The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.
[6] A fool’s lips walk into a fight, and his mouth invites a beating. [7] A fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul. [8] The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels; they go down into the inner parts of the body.
[13] If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.
[17] The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.
[19] A brother offended is more unyielding than a strong city, and quarreling is like the bars of a castle. [20] From the fruit of a man’s mouth his stomach is satisfied; he is satisfied by the yield of his lips. [21] Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

Additional Readings: Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 7, Sections 1-3
I. The distance between God and the creature is so great, that although reasonable creatures do owe obedience unto him as their Creator, yet they could never have any fruition of him as their blessedness and reward, but by some voluntary condescension on God’s part, which he hath been pleased to express by way of covenant.
II. The first covenant made with man was a covenant of works, wherein life was promised to Adam; and in him to his posterity, upon condition of perfect and personal obedience.
III. Man, by his fall, having made himself incapable of life by that covenant, the Lord was pleased to make a second, commonly called the covenant of grace; wherein he freely offereth unto sinners life and salvation by Jesus Christ; requiring of them faith in him, that they may be saved, and promising to give unto all those that are ordained unto eternal life his Holy Spirit, to make them willing, and able to believe.
