History & Vision

God gave the vision for a new church plant in south Overland Park to PCA church planter Mike Milton while he was finishing seminary. In 1993 Pastor Milton and a faithful core group planted Redeemer Presbyterian Mission Church. In just over a year Redeemer became an official church in the Presbyterian Church in America.

In 1996 Redeemer purchased land and a house that would become our permanent home.

The house was converted under the oversight of Redeemer’s second pastor, Mark Merritt, and the congregation began worshiping there in late 1996. That same year Redeemer began a Christian day school called Westminster Academy in the converted garage of the house with kindergarten and first grade.

For the next 10 years, from 1996 to 2006, Redeemer and Westminster had perpetual building construction and enhancements going on to accommodate the growing church and school.

Pastor Tony Felich came as the youth pastor in 1997 and became Redeemer’s third pastor in 2001. In 2002 Pastor Nathan Currey came as the Associate Pastor. In 2006 Pastor Brian Hough came as the Assistant pastor with a special calling to minister to Redeemer’s youth and families.

The high point of Redeemer’s building projects was the construction of a beautiful new sanctuary that stands as a landmark in south Overland Park. The first worship service in the new sanctuary occurred in September of 2007.

Closely connected to the life of the church has been our school. Westminster Academy was founded in 1996.  In 2005 the name was changed to Westminster Christian Academy. Westminster had grades pre-K thru 10th grade in 2009 when an opportunity to merge with a neighboring Christian school arose. In 2010 Westminster Christian Academy merged with Berean Christian School to form a new school with two campuses and all grades through high school called Heritage Christian Academy. Heritage is under the oversight and authority of Redeemer, just like Westminster was. Heritage currently has an enrollment of over 450 students, pre-K through 12th grade.
