A Word from the RGBCC Director
- Rev. Nathan Currey

Ever since I started in ministry in 1997, I have had a passion for flock care and specifically for counseling. The Fall of 2009 marked the realization of a dream I have had since coming to Redeemer in 2002.

In the Fall of 2009, we opened the Redeeming Grace Biblical Counseling Center. We were approved to be in the first group of National Association of Nouthetic Counselors (NANC) certified training centers at the Annual Conference in October of 2009. NANC recently changed its name to the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC) but maintains it’s purpose. You can find out more about this approach to Biblical Counseling at biblicalcounseling.com

The vision for our center is to see the powerful truths of the Bible bring healing and transformation to broken and hurting people through God’s redeeming grace. We will see this vision fulfilled first, by providing instruction and hands-on practice for people who desire to help people with God’s Word and second, through providing biblical counseling to the community through ACBC certified counselors and counselors in training.

The instruction and training will be done Mondays 6:30-8:30pm. In September, we are offering Introduction to Biblical Counseling and in January, we will be offering Marriage & Family Counseling Class for credit (toward ACBC Certification) and for audit (for anyone who wants training in using God’s Word to help others). Anyone is welcome to attend these classes, just fill out a registration form.

History of Redeeming Grace Biblical Counseling Center

It has been quite a journey!  In 2002 the counseling center at Redeemer Presbyterian Church had it’s humble beginnings.  By counseling center I mean I was doing counseling as part of my pastoral call and then led some Sunday school and Sunday evening classes on various aspects and issues in counseling.  It was becoming clear that there were more people seeking help for their problems than I could ever hope to help on my own, so I started to intentionally work toward Certification with NANC in 2006.  After a few rewrites of exams and many hours of supervision finally received certification.  This was a first step but God had more in store.

The Lord had been pushing me to take more of a focused approach to getting people training and equipping fo biblical counseling.  I have seen God’s grace at work in so many unexpected ways as I muddled through the counseling and trying to prepare others.  I was encouraged by a few people to start the process for becoming a NANC certified training center.  This would be quite an undertaking, but we needed to have a pipeline for preparing people to help with the growing list of people seeking help.  By October 2009 we were approved as a NANC certified Training Center!  In 2013 NANC changed it’s name while retaining it’s Biblical focus.  We are now the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors (ACBC) I count it a privilege and a joy to see God work in so many lives as His all-sufficient Word is applied to hurting and broken people.

We have now embarked on a new adventure with the approval of our counseling center as an ACBC certified training center. It is my hope and prayer to see men and women trained over the next couple years and to see some receive ACBC certification. I desire to see more counselors ready to meet the needs of broken people in our community and in turn, Kansas City transformed by the awesome power of God’s Redeeming Grace.  I am so glad to see God working through the 2 other certified counselors we have as part of our center.

In October of 2014 I was made a Fellow with ACBC.  This allows me to help counselors finish their supervised stage of preparation for certification.  What a humbling thing it is to see God shape and challenge me as I work with other brothers and sisters in Christ to see lives changed by God’s Redeeming Grace!
