1 Corinthians was Paul’s pastoral letter to a church divided and in need of finding her first love and devotion again (Jesus). After sending off his letter to Corinth, Paul eagerly awaited the response. A few months later Titus brought word of a warm and humble reply on the whole. Paul was trying to get to Corinth, but was delayed by other important ministry efforts. His delay prompted some naysayers to sling mud on Paul’s name and apostolic ministry. Paul eventually got back to Corinth and spent several very wonderful and profitable months shoring up the Church there. Before he arrived, however, he wrote another letter, which is 2 Corinthians.

This letter is Paul’s most personal expose’ of all the thirteen epistles he penned. He is forced to defend his apostleship against pot-stirring rebel rousers. Couched in this very personal letter is a clear pattern Paul describes as God’s way of cultivating His Children. The normal pattern for an athlete preparing for a big athletic event or a season of grueling games is training and conditioning beforehand. A participant is sure to be at their strongest when readying to compete. Not so in God’s economy. Instead of protecting and training us, so we’re at our strongest possible state, God uses the afflictions, trials, problems, difficulties, and challenges of life, to make us usable for His glory. God regularly uses the weak things of this life (including us), to manifest His all-surpassing power. 2 Corinthians helps explain the ultimate purpose for affliction and problems in the lives of believers. 2 Corinthians is very much a letter intent on cultivating ambassadors for Christ.
